Onions

History

Onions date back as far as 2500 B.C.  They were used by many cultures, for many different reasons. Each culture had theories about how onions should be used. Some believed onions would wake the dead because of their smell, while others believed they would cure ills. By the middle ages, onions were one of the main vegetables used for meals. Today, they continue to be just as prevalent.

How are they grown?

Onions are grown in the soil. They start off as seeds and take about five or six months to grow. Most of the onion grows on top of the soil, but a small part grows below the soil. It is easy to know when they are ready to pick because the tops lay down when growth is complete.

Nutritional Value

Onions provide phytochemicals and much-needed nutrients. Onions contain vitamin C, fiber, protein, folic acid, calcium, and iron. All of these things are considered to be great for your health, but the one ingredient that stands out is quercetin, which is a flavonoid. Quercetin has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects which can be used to help treat many conditions such as high cholesterol, heart disease and more.
